Islanders from around the globe are coming together for the Virtual Island Summit. From September 7th through 13th, speakers and attendees from more than 100 island communities will come together to share ideas, best practices, and solutions.
The zero-carbon conference, organized by Island Innovation, aims to drive sustainability and prosperity for island communities. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from leading voices, including Fekitamoeloa Katoa’ Utoikamanu, UN Under-Secretary-General & High Representative, for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries & Small Island Developing States; Frank Bainimarama, Prime Minister of Fiji; Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana; and Ralph Everard Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Through the event, attendees will have access to more than 30 interactive panels, roundtables, and keynote sessions. Sessions will cover a variety of topics focused on economic recovery, sustainability, and good governance.
While only contributing less than one percent to the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are on the frontlines of climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions and increasing development from G20 countries have caused a variety of negative externalities for islands across the world.
Rising sea levels, coastal erosion, flooding, and extreme weather events plague island nations, impacting settlements, infrastructure, food security, and livelihoods.
While SIDS are the most vulnerable to climate change, they have continued to exemplify leadership in climate change and sustainable development.
Through the Virtual Island Summit, attendees will hear from the global leaders on the frontlines. More than 100 policymakers, entrepreneurs, utility representatives, academics, and NGO leaders will be sharing their expertise on island communities and the latest projects being deployed.
