Last week, the New York Yankees became the first major North American sports organization to sign on to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework.
The UN Sports for Climate Action Framework launched at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP24) in Katowice, Poland in December. The Framework was created to drive emissions reductions of sports operations and engage with millions of sports fans around the world.
As a signatory to the Framework, the Yankees have committed to support the following five principles:
- Undertake systemic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility
- Reduce their overall climate impact
- Educate for climate action
- Promote sustainable and responsible consumption
- Advocate for climate action through communication
“The New York Yankees are proud to support the United Nations Sports for Climate Action Framework. For many years the Yankees have been implementing the type of climate action now enshrined in the Sports for Climate Action principles, and with this pledge the Yankees commit to continue to work collaboratively with our sponsors, fans and other relevant stakeholders to implement the UN’s climate action agenda in sports,” said New York Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner.
In 2016, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recognized the legendary team for their state-of-the-art programs and commitment to sustainability at the 13th Annual New York State Environmental Excellence Awards.
Earlier this year, the Yankees announced the creation of an environmental science advisor position, the first of its kind in professional sports. Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, Founder of the Green Sports Alliance, was appointed to the position.

With their rich winning tradition, the Yankees bring a new level of leadership to global efforts to tackle climate change. When it comes to safeguarding our future, it’s time to play ball,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
The Yankees join several prominent international organizations that have committed to the Framework including the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, and Formula E.
